Understanding the Role of Device Communication in Autism

Many parents fear that if they introduce their autistic child to device communication tools their child will simply forego trying to learn to speak. The fact is, some device communication tools can actually improve the possibility of your child developing speech. Research has shown that such tools do not impair speech development at all; additionally, it is human nature to take the easy way and as children develop their speech they inherently find it easier to vocalize than to go through the many steps necessary to use imagery and devices to communicate. Many speech therapists recommend device communication tools that have audible output to help encourage speech. As the child hears the spoken words they are more inclined to try and speak. It is natural for parents to be concerned about the development of their child and to want them to learn everything they can.
